Scavenger hunt focuses on history by Staff Historic Downtown North Wilkesboro (HDTNW) and the Town of Wilkesboro will observe National Historic Preservation Month with an architectural scavenger hunt in both towns on Saturday, May 22, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The event is to showcase what both towns are doing to preserve history. Participants will start the event by picking up an entry blank at either town hall. According to Laura Blackburn, the director if HDTNW, ''they can then search high and low to match the pictures on the form with historic places. All pictures will be of exterior architecture and will be located in the historic districts of both towns. ''This is a very easy to walk, comfortable event,'' she said. ''We hope participants will take their time exploring both historic districts and enjoy our beautiful inventory of historic buildings. You can gaze at the intense architectural designs, have fun and win prizes.'' No prior knowledge of the downtown areas is required. Once participants have completed the trail in one town, they can drive across the river to the other town and finish the architectural scavenger hunt. They can then return the completed form to either town hall for a chance to win cash prizes. Mrs. Blackburn added, ''We welcome families and teams to participate together.'' The first 300 participants will receive a Wilkes Telecommunications reusable tote bag filled with ''goodies.'' Various local agencies and retailers will be along the route in both towns to distribute information about their organizations or business.
