Historic Downtown North Wilkesboro’s (HDTNW) Second Annual Wine and Art Festival, the Grape Escape, will this year feature the theme “Shine to Wine.” It will be held in North Wilkesboro on Tenth Street, between Main and D Streets, on Saturday, May 6. Melissa Smithey, Executive Director of HDTNW, stated, “We’re hoping that the later date will give us better weather. Last year’s festival was a big success in spite of being what we on the committee affectionately call ‘the wind festival’.”
Smithey continued by stating “people find our moonshine history fascinating, so we are weaving the theme into our festival.” The Shine to Wine name is in the process of becoming a legal trademark for HDTNW.
The Wilkes Art Gallery will host free lectures during the festival, including one that will focus on our “shining” past. Also, some of the festival’s scheduled attractions will feature the moonshine theme.
Festival goers will be able to taste and buy wines from nine North Carolina wineries, and enjoy the food and art vendors and free live music from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday. The Wilkes Art Gallery will also host a reception with wine tasting on Friday evening before the festival. Tickets for the wine festival are $10 in advance, or $15 at the gate, and tickets for the Art Gallery reception are $20 in advance. Discounted tickets are available for those who choose to attend both events. Advance tickets can be purchased at Ivy Ridge Traditions, Wilkes Art Gallery, and online at http://www.downtownnorthwilkesboro.com/grapeescape/.
