Approximately 25 interested homeowners and owners of business properties attended the Historic Preservation Tax Credit workshop sponsored by Historic Downtown North Wilkesboro on Tuesday, February 28.
The workshop was conducted by Tim Simmons, David Christenbury, and Becca Johnson, representatives from the State Historic Preservation Office within the North Carolina Office of Archives and History. They explained the qualifications and application procedures in order for property owners to utilize federal and state tax income credits for renovating historic commercial and residential properties.
Properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places are candidates for these tax credits. Federal and State tax credits of 40% of preservation costs are available for income-producing properties on a 20% Federal 20% State basis, while State tax credits of 30% are available for non-income producing properties such as residences.
Carl and Brenda Page of Page Interworks were also present to answer questions about their restoration project and use of the tax credits.
